Shona Laing Shona Laing.
Pass The Whisper.
There are a small number of New Zealand singers whose every album is an important musical occasion, in that it promises a fresh collection of songs from someone who is indelibly part of the country's musical psyche: the likes of Neil Finn, Dave Dobbin, Don McGlashan and, without a doubt, Shona Laing. Shona Laing's songs (1905, Show Your Love, Neutral & Nuclear Free, (Glad I'm) Not A Kennedy, Soviet Snow, etc) have captured the popular imagination of the times as well as achieving Top 10 Singles success and radio airplay across NZ, America, Australia and the UK, while stubbornly refusing to compromise their intelligence and lyrical integrity. "Pass The Whisper" is a return to Shona's folk roots. It is all played, acoustic guitar-based, with Celtic colours of pipes, flutes and bhodran (courtesy of Rua's Jimmy Young), the amazing textures of James Wilkinson's guitars, the stand-up bass of Nigel Masters and the drums of Ian Gilpin. Mahinarangi Tocker, Denny Stanway and James Wilkinson join Shona on backing vocals. "Pass The Whisper" includes seven new songs as well radical reworkings of Soviet Snow, (Glad I'm) Not A Kennedy, Caught and Shoulda Bin For You. There is also a "poppy" bonus / ghost track (Happy Song) from the 70's that features the crazy drumming of Bruno Lawrence. Of the new songs Taihoa and Fact are obvious stand-outs as radio airplay singles. Waitakere Rain and Windmills both combine global impressions with a unique sense of New Zealand. Shona shows that she has lost none of her acerbic wit as evidenced in the blues romp Comfort Song (Not), a swipe at American foreign policy. The only song on the album not written by Shona is Mahinarangi Tocker's beautiful and bilingual My Love Be Still.

Eva and Chris Prowse Eva And Chris Prowse.
Five Songs EP.
Five Songs is an EP that pays tribute to some of their influences while establishing a musical signature of their own. They offer fresh country-pop arrangements of songs by writers as diverse as Little Feat's Lowell George and New Zealand's own Bic Runga; delve into the blues in a moody treatment of a Little Milton tune, and present a pair of striking Chris Prowse originals - the upbeat, bluegrass-y 'I'll Fly For Your Love' and emotive, Irish-inflected 'Leaving Carrickfergus'.

April Phillips April Phillips.
April.
All proceeds from April are being donated to the Make A Wish Foundation ("granting the wishes of children with life-threatening illnesses to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy", as it is explained in the liner notes). And certainly that is to be admired. And it is reason enough, I believe, to support this artistic endeavor. But, April is also a lovely album, because April Phillips can really sing. And her voice is put to perfect use across a mix of jazz and pop standards, from "Old Devil Moon" and "It Had To Be You" to "Someone To Watch Over Me" and "The Man I Love". Backed by the best local jazz musicians (Norman Meehan, piano/keyboards;Johnny Lippiett, saxophone; Lance Philip, drums) April's voice dominates the rich layered tune. And Norman Meehan's sympathetic, gentle arrangements perfectly account for this. fans of vocal jazz will be impressed with this local talent - and what a novel way to support a wonderful cause.

Atmospheres From Other Worlds.
This is a very unique atmospheric CD. It's style is new age ambient but it touches on new territories possibly not encountered so far in this genre. It is subtle and deeply mystical and takes the listener as the title suggests, to other worlds. It is otherworldly and draws the listener into a timeless and tranquil zone of experience.

Recorded over three nights at the Verandah Cafe in Eastbourne, "Live On The Verandah" sees Hot Club Sandwich stepping out in ebullient form at their favourite venue, with three guest musicians, each providing a different flavour. Neil Billington plays some visceral blues harp - bringing the roof down on Elvis "Frankfurt Special". Saxaphonist Johnny Lippiett tears through some standards as well - "Almost Like Being In Love" and Ellington's "It Don't Mean A Thing" cook along nicely. Double Bass player James Cameron croons in great western swing style on :Dance With Who Brung You", and "Room With A View". His presence in the trio allows Crayford to move over to piano, displaying once again how good he is at spontaneous improvisation. London plays rhythm guitar throughout. Enjoy Yourself or Get Out.
The debut CD from Hot Club Sandwich shows not only some fine musicianship, but also some blossoming songwriting talent. Veteran jazzo Terry Crayford lays down solid acoustic bass on all 12 original tracks, and plenty of the virtuoso jazz piano style he is well-known for in Wellington: and which has made him accompanist-of-choice for international visiting stars such as Jimmy Witherspoon (ex Count Basie Band), Scott Hamilton (sax legend), and Ronnie Scott. Andrew London plays foot-tapping rhythm guitar and sings everything from heart wrenching ballads to scorching country-rockers. Look out for some Delta-style blues and Tin-Pan Alley-like jazz tunes. Violinist Nik Brown sails effortlessly around on top relishing the opportunity to return to some Grappelly-like improvising on some tracks, and making short work of his more recognized Warratahs-style country vamping on others. Neil Billington pops in for a cameo.
